Quick answers
- How much gaffer tape is in one roll?
- 150 ft. A Wow roll is 2 in wide and 50 yd long, which is 150 ft or 45.7 m. Many other gaffer tapes are 30 yd (90 ft).
- How much tape do I need to tape down a 50 ft stinger?
- 55 ft. One full strip over a 50 ft cable plus 10% for trimming. One roll covers almost three 50 ft runs.
- How much tape do I need for a seamless backdrop?
- About 36 ft. That tapes the front edge and both sides of a 107 in (9 ft) roll with a 12 ft floor run.
- How much floor does one roll cover?
- 25 sq ft. That is strips laid edge to edge. With a ¼ in overlap it covers about 22 sq ft.
How the gaffers tape calculator works
Every job turns into one number, linear feet of 2 in tape. The calculator adds a little extra for trimming and divides by the length of one roll.
- Measure the job. Measure the floor area, walk the real cable path, or add up every edge and line you will mark.
- Convert to linear feet. One strip per cable run, two strips for thick or bundled cable, or one 12 in tab every 3 ft. For an area:
strips = width in ÷ 1.75, thenfeet = strips × length. - Add extra for trimming. The default is 10%, which covers tears, corners and a few mistakes.
- Divide by 150 and round up.
rolls = feet ÷ 150. Square yards of tape isyards × 2 ÷ 36.
How much gaffer tape for a studio shoot or film set
On a photo or video set, most tape goes to three jobs: covering cable runs where crew and talent walk, holding down seamless backdrop paper, and placing marks. Here is a typical small studio day.
- Stingers come in standard lengths. Grip and electric extension cords are usually 25, 50 or 100 ft. Tape the full length where people walk and use the calculator’s quick picks.
- Seamless paper comes in four widths. 53 in, 86 in, 107 in (9 ft) and 140 in (12 ft). Tape the front edge and both sides where the paper lies on the floor so it does not curl or slide.
- Matte means no glare on camera. Black gaffers tape disappears in the shot. Use white for marks and labels you need to see and write on.
How much gaffing tape for common jobs
All numbers include 10% extra for trimming, the same default the calculator uses.
| Job | Tape needed | Rolls (2 in × 50 yd) |
|---|---|---|
| Three 25 ft stingers, full cover | 83 ft | 1 |
| One 50 ft stinger, full cover | 55 ft | 1 |
| One 100 ft feeder run, two strips | 220 ft | 2 |
| Ten 50 ft cable runs for an event | 550 ft | 4 |
| 107 in seamless, front and side edges (12 ft floor run) | 36 ft | 1 |
| 50 talent or spike marks | 37 ft | 1 |
| Cover a 4 × 8 ft area | 246 ft | 2 |
| One pickleball court | 218 ft | 2 |
| One indoor volleyball court | 292 ft | 2 |
Gaff tape for court lines
Gaffer tape also works for temporary lines on indoor floors. A regulation pickleball court is 20 × 44 ft with 2 in lines, 198 ft in total, so 2 rolls per court. An indoor volleyball court has 81 m (about 266 ft) of lines, also 2 rolls. Clean the floor first, test a small piece on finished wood and pull the lines within a few days.
How many feet are in a roll of gaffers tape?
It depends on the brand, so check the label before you compare prices. Many gaffer tapes come in 30 yd rolls. Every roll of Wow Gaff Tape is 50 yd, so you change rolls less often on a long day.

A 30 yd roll gives you 60% of the tape in one Wow roll. Compare the price per foot, not the price per roll.

Gaffer tape calculator FAQ
How much gaffer tape do I need for a photo or video shoot?
Add up your cable runs, backdrop edges and marks. A typical small studio day with two 25 ft stingers taped full length (about 55 ft), a 107 in seamless backdrop taped at the front and sides (about 36 ft) and 20 talent marks (about 15 ft) needs about 106 ft. That is one 50 yd roll, so bring a second as a spare.
How much gaffer tape do I need to tape down a cable?
Plan on the length of the cable run plus about 10% for trimming. A 50 ft stinger taped with one full strip takes about 55 ft of 2 in tape. Thick or bundled cables need two strips side by side, so double it.
How do I tape down seamless backdrop paper?
Tape the front edge and both sides of the paper where it lies on the floor, so it does not curl or slide. A 107 in (9 ft) roll with a 12 ft floor run needs about 36 ft of tape. Standard seamless widths are 53, 86, 107 and 140 in.
Should I use black or white gaffer tape in a studio?
Use black for cables and anything that might be seen on camera, because the matte finish does not reflect light. Use white for talent marks, labels and anything you need to see or write on.
How many feet are in a roll of gaffer tape?
It depends on the brand. Many gaffer tapes come in 30 yd rolls, which is 90 ft. Every Wow roll is 2 in × 50 yd, which is 150 ft or 45.7 m.
How many square feet does a roll of gaffer tape cover?
A 2 in × 50 yd roll covers 25 sq ft (2.78 sq yd) when strips are laid edge to edge. With a ¼ in overlap so no gaps show, it covers about 22 sq ft.
How much tape do I need for a pickleball or volleyball court?
Plan on 2 rolls per court. A pickleball court has 198 ft of 2 in lines and an indoor volleyball court has 81 m (about 266 ft). Gaffer tape suits temporary lines on indoor floors.
How many rolls are in a case of gaffer tape?
A Wow case holds 24 rolls of 2 in × 50 yd tape. That is 1,200 yd or 3,600 ft of tape.
Is it cheaper to buy gaff tape in bulk?
