Wow black gaffer tape, 2 inch x 50 yards, case of 24 rolls

Short answer: One 2 inch x 50 yard roll of gaffer tape gives you 150 feet of tape. Most small shoots and events use 1 to 2 rolls a day, a full film or event crew uses 3 to 6 rolls a day, and a multi-day production or venue usually buys by the case. Work out how many feet you need, divide by 150, then add 25% for waste and surprises.

Running out of gaffers tape halfway through a load-in is one of those small problems that turns into a big one. Order too much and it sits on a shelf. This guide gives you a simple formula and real-world numbers so you can buy the right amount the first time.

How much tape is on one roll?

Roll length is the first thing to check, because it varies a lot between brands. Many budget rolls hold 30 yards or less. A Wow Gaffers Tape roll is 2 inches wide and 50 yards long, which works out to 150 feet of tape per roll.

Roll size Feet per roll Rolls needed for 600 ft
2 in x 30 yd 90 ft 7
2 in x 50 yd (Wow) 150 ft 4

A longer roll means fewer roll changes on set and fewer rolls to buy for the same job. Always compare price per foot, not price per roll.

The formula

  1. Add up the feet you will tape. Cable runs, floor marks, labels and anything you hold down.
  2. Divide by 150 (feet on one 50 yard roll).
  3. Add 25% for re-taping, mistakes and last-minute changes.
  4. Round up. Never plan to finish the last roll.

Example: 320 feet of cable runs and marks / 150 = 2.1 rolls. Add 25% = 2.7. Buy 3 rolls.

How much tape each job uses

These are working estimates from typical setups. Your numbers will change with how many cables you run and how often the set changes.

Job How tape is used Rolls per day (2 in x 50 yd)
Photo shoot or small studio day Backdrops, a few cable runs, marks 1
Podcast or video studio setup Cable tape under desks, floor marks, labels 1 to 2
Wedding or private event DJ and lighting cables, aisle runner edges, signs 2 to 3
Trade show booth Cable runs, graphics, case labels 2 to 4
Film or TV shoot, full crew Grip, electric, camera and art departments 3 to 6
Concert, theater load-in Cable runs, spike marks, cord tape at entrances 4 to 8

Cable runs use the most tape

Cables crossing a walkway need a full-length strip, so a 20 foot crossing uses 20 feet of tape. Cables along a wall or under a desk only need a short tab every 2 to 3 feet. Plan both:

  • Full strip (walkways): 1 foot of tape per foot of cable.
  • Tabs every 3 feet (edges, desks): about 6 inches of tape per 3 feet of cable, roughly one sixth of the run.

Black, white or both?

Most crews carry both. Black gaffers tape disappears on stage, in shadow and on camera, so it is the default for cable tape and anything in shot. White gaff tape is easy to see and write on, so it is used for labels, spike marks and anything people need to read. A common split is 3 black rolls to 1 white. More on that in black vs white gaffer tape.

When to buy a case

If you use more than 2 rolls a week, or you stock several kits, buying by the case is cheaper per roll and means you never run short. A case holds 24 rolls, which is 3,600 feet of tape. Teams ordering 6 or more cases can apply for business pricing. Read the guide to buying gaffer tape in bulk for how case orders work.

Frequently asked questions

How many feet are in a roll of gaffers tape?

It depends on the roll. A 2 inch x 50 yard roll, like Wow Gaffers Tape, holds 150 feet. Many cheaper rolls hold 30 yards (90 feet) or less, so check the length before comparing prices.

How many rolls of gaffer tape do I need for a film shoot?

A small crew usually gets through 1 to 2 rolls a day. A full crew with grip, electric and camera departments uses 3 to 6 rolls a day. For a multi-day shoot, a case of 24 is usually the better buy.

How many rolls of gaffer tape do I need for an event?

Plan on 2 to 3 rolls for a wedding or private event and 4 to 8 for a concert or theater load-in. Add 25% so you are not hunting for tape during the show.

What size gaffers tape should I buy?

Gaffers tape 2 inch is the standard width for cable runs, floor tape and general use. Narrower tape is mostly for spike marks and labels.

Is it cheaper to buy gaffer tape in bulk?

Yes. Packs and cases cost less per roll than single rolls, and businesses ordering 6 or more cases can get tier pricing.

Bottom line

Count your feet, divide by 150, add 25% and round up. For one-off jobs, a 2-pack or 6-pack covers most needs. For crews and venues, a case of 24 keeps every kit stocked.
